The bridge carries 4 lanes of traffic and a 12’ wide sidewalk/bike path. 5 overlooks along the bridge, each dedicated to one of the armed services, provide opportunities to pause and enjoy the view. To encourage competitive bidding designs were prepared for both steel and concrete box girders.  The steel alternative was chosen.

The previous bridge also carried as aerial lines the multiple high voltage electrical cables that serve as the principle east-west connections for North Dakota’s power grid.  On the new bridge these cables are carried within the box girders. The large concrete abutments at the ends of the main span girders are actually hollow and provide space for the electrical switchgear for the cables.  They also provide a visual element that smooths the transition between the steel box girder main spans and the precast concrete girder approach spans.

Mr. Gottemoeller led the interactions with the CAC, developed the concepts for the main span piers, abutments, overlooks, railings and lighting and the aesthetic details of the approach spans and provided general aesthetic advice to the engineering team.
