The Rich Street Bridge
Columbus, OH
More Information:
The bridge is part of a larger reconstruction of the Scioto riverfront, called the Scioto Mile, that involved reconstructing the parks and riverwalks on both banks and adding a restaurant pavilion on the east shore. The sidewalks, railings, lighting and abutments of the bridge were coordinated with the new park development.
The bridge itself is a 5-span, 563 foot long structure supported on four lines of custom precast concrete arches. Both the arches and girders consist of precast concrete segments constructed using high strength lightweight concrete. The arches are made up of three precast segments: two identical arch legs and a keystone segment. A third standardized segment connects the crowns of the arches. The segments were connected with short closure pours and then the whole line of arches was post-tensioned to function as a single five span unit.
The horizontal and vertical alignments of the bridge were made symmetrical so that all 68 precast arch segments could be cast in just three adjustable forms. As a result the bridge was built for $12.5 million, about $1.5 million less than its budget and less than a third of the cost of the Main Street Bridge downstream, a bridge of essentially the same size.
A large number of utilities are carried on the bridge. They are carried between the arch ribs just below the deck and are concealed by gray fiberglass grating panels.
Mr. Gottemoeller developed the overall concept of the bridge working with John Shanks of Burgess and Niple, Columbus and Siegfried Hopf of Leonhardt Andra und Partner, Stuttgart. Mr. Gottemoeller developed the architectural and urgan design features and the lighting concept.
